The Benedictine abbey of Saints Peter and Paul in Tyniec was founded by Casimir the Restorer in 1044. The Benedictines refer to Saint Benedict of Nursia, who in his youth decided to become a hermit. After living in solitude, he became the superior of the monk community near his hermitage. However, they did not want to meet his requirements: they decided to poison him, but the chalice with poisoned wine fell apart when St. Benedict made a gesture of blessing over him. The saint left that monastery to found a new one, on the top of Monte Cassino, where the abbey, which has been ruined many times, is still standing today.
